Introduction to Pin Loom Weaving

In this workshop you will learn how to use a pin loom to weave a square approximately 4” square.

All materials will be provided.

Intarsia knitting

Tutor: Anniken Allis

Intarsia knitting is a technique that allows you to knit pictures or abstract designs. Two or more colours are used in each row and the colours are never stranded across the back of the work, as they are in Fair Isle knitting (or stranded knitting).

You will learn how to knit with two or more colours per row, how to manage several colours without getting in a tangle, how to read intarsia charts.

Suitable for knitters who have Confident basic knitting skills: knit, purl, cast on and cast off.

Materials needed: please bring dk yarn (two or more colours – you will need small amounts of each colour), 4mm knitting needles (straight or circulars) and knitting notions.

Christmas Wreath Ideas with Knit & Natter

Get inspiration for Christmas themed crochet star, flowers, leaves etc.
Mix and match them with pompoms or felt flowers to design your own
wreath. Small and medium wreath forms will be provided. Suitable for
those who can crochet basic stiches. Please bring DK yarn in suitable
colours and a 4mm crochet hook, there will be hooks to borrow at the
session.

Introduction to Spinning using hand spindles

Tutor: Eileen McTague

Come and join Eileen to learn about preparing fleece and fibre, try some carding and learn to make your own yarn using a top whorl drop spindle. This is a fun, low-cost and portable way to spin.

Scoured wool fibre will be provided. If you have your own hand carders and a top whorl spindle please bring them along, plus a pair of large knitting needles (eg 10-12 mm). Spare tools will be available for you to use.

Suitable for all.

Two colour brioche knitting basics

Tutor: Anniken Allis

Brioche knitting is very popular. In this workshop you will learn two colour brioche starting with a basic brioche rib and syncopated brioche, reading brioche patterns and how to fix basic mistakes.

Suitable for: confident basic knitting skills: knit, purl, cast on and cast off

Materials needed: double knitting yarn (two colours), 4mm circular needles (60 or 80cm long) and knitting notions.

Needle felt a bird bauble

Using sheep’s wool and a barbed needle you will learn the skills of needlefelting whilst making a Christmas tree bauble in the shape of a fat bird.

How to knit a Fair Isle cushion cover

Tutor: Anniken Allis

Learn how to knit the ‘Diamonds are forever’ stranded cushion: learn how to knit in the round holding one colour in each hand, how to strand the yarn and achieve perfect tension, how to sew up the cushion using mattress stitch, one row button holes and how to assemble the bag.

This class is suitable for knitters new to stranded colour work or knitters who already know how to knit stranded colour work but want to improve their skills.

Please bring 100g each of two colours dk yarn (more colours can be used), 3.75mm 80cm long circular needles (you may wish to bring 4mm and 3.5mm needles as well, in case you need a different needle size to achieve correct tension), stitch marker, 20x20cm cushion pad (not necessary to bring to the class), 4 buttons (2cm wide) and blunt sewing needle.

Wild weaving

Tutor: Lisa Brooks

Join Lisa on this fun workshop where we will be exploring basic weaving techniques using wool, fabric and other, more unusual textiles with a variety of simple looms to choose from.  You will be able to weave a no sew bag using just scrap fabrics, make a wall hanging on a square or a round loom or try out peg looms to practise making a small mat/rug. Join us for half a day to learn some new techniques and get some inspiration or for a full day to get in a bit more practise and complete your piece.  Whether you can come for the whole day or just half we promise to send you away feeling inspired about texture, colour and materials and as always the emphasis will be on interesting, enjoyable making!

Tablet weaving 

Tutor: Lynda Moss

NB. This workshop will run as 2 half days or a full day. Choose which combination suits you.

Tablet weaving is an ancient method of weaving which produces strong, durable bands suitable for belts, straps etc.

In the morning session you will learn how to make the tablets and shuttle needed for tablet weaving and in the afternoon you will learn how to set up your cards and weave a band using 3 colours.

Suitable for those new to tablet weaving and those with some experience.

  • For the morning please bring: 2xthick A4 cards (the back of an A4 notepad is ideal), a single hole punch if you have one, scissors, pencil, ruler

  • For the afternoon please bring: 3x50g balls of different coloured cotton 4ply or DK

NB If you choose to attend the afternoon session only you will need to bring your own tablets and a shuttle.

Beginners’ Tunisian Crochet

Tunisian crochet is a form of crochet that uses a long hook to gather up and then work off stitches, making a compact fabric, suitable for bags, cushions, hand warmers and many other projects.

You will learn the basic techniques and stitches of Tunisian crochet and how to use different colours to make great effects in your projects.

The workshop will include instruction sheets for the basic stitches and techniques.

Suitable for people who have basic crochet skills

Please bring: 2 contrasting colours of DK or aran weight yarn, one of which can be colour changing, or both plain, to your preference

Tunisian crochet hook:- 4.5mm for DK or 5mm for aran.

Tunisian Hooks will be available to borrow at the workshop.

Tunisian Mosaic crochet

Tunisian Mosaic creates colourful and geometric patterns using Tunisian simple stitch combined with Tunisian mosaic stitch, which is a simple stitch to learn.

There are no charts to follow, only written instruction and these are included in the workshop.

Amigurumi Crochet Jellyfish

Many people would love to crochet animals, but have difficulty with the techniques and following a pattern.

In this workshop we will be making a simple jellyfish, where you will learn the techniques of shaping that are applicable to all sorts of different animals.

These include: magic ring, working in a circle, how to make a round head by increasing and decreasing in the round, invisible decrease, how to make curly tentacles.

Suitable for anyone with basic crochet skills

Materials – Please bring light coloured cotton DK yarn and 3.5mm or 4mm hook

Two colour brioche knitting uses increases and decreases to create complex looking lines and patterns and can be challenging. In this class you’ll learn how to work increases and decreases and will be given a pattern for a pair of handwarmers to take home.
